Spring 2023 Art Gallery, 5 pieces for Cancer |
Artist Statement:I’ve been taking ceramics for 4 years now, and every year I’ve seen my work become more meaningful to me and the people around me. This year, I decided to tackle a more demanding challenge as Ms. Sanyour says “This is a studio workshop, push yourselves”. I looked at a challenge that has been with me since the start, Cancer. To clarify, I don’t have cancer, but many people have had to deal with the battle throughout my life. I wanted to make pieces that directly represented cancer in some shape or form, some have died and others have persevered. I wanted to make pieces to show that Cancer isn’t what directly represents them and it isn’t their whole life. I made pieces to represent the different cancers as well as to show that it isn’t a battle for one person, it’s a battle for everyone. I wanted to remind the people that have fought these cancers that they’re not alone and we rally behind them. For my bone, I created it to represent leukemia which is bone cancer, showing that the bone is strong and can beat cancer, that it’s a winnable battle. After that, I created two pieces for skin cancer mainly because my grandfather has been battling it for years now. I created a sun to represent the cause of cancer and a sunscreen bottle to show the prevention of skin cancer. After that, I created a teapot and drew orchid flowers on the pot to represent testicular cancer and what can be the beauty behind cancer. Although it’s a tough battle you can see the beauty within the battle and ultimately come out stronger. Lastly, I created a shield with netting to represent Pancreatic cancer as the pancreas acts as the netting that keeps our body together. The shield represents the fact that unity is the strongest and even though Pancreatic cancer is one of the most dangerous ones to get, relying on the people around you can help make you stronger.
